The Avonlea Story

When contemplating a name for the next iteration of the business commencing January 2020, Gareth asked his brother why he had chosen to name their farming property, Avonlea. Gareth’s brother said it was a name that had been used within the Hunt family for two generations and he thought he would continue the tradition – a third generation.

Gareth asked his father, Max about the origins of the name, thinking that it might be a good name for the business. Max explained the name Avonlea started with his mother, Gareth’s grandmother, Ellen Hunt. Ellen had always loved the name and so Gareth’s grandfather, also a wool farmer, had a branding stencil made up so that he could send wool to market under the brand, Avonlea.

Gareth decided that Avonlea Advisory had a nice ring to it, and that he too would continue the tradition of using Avonlea within the family.

On Gareth’s father’s passing a few months after the inception of Avonlea Advisory, Gareth came across a photo taken in the early 1990’s of his father proudly standing behind two bales of their super fine merino wool. Gareth was intrigued that the wool was presented to market under the brand of Avonlea rather than the name of the property, which was industry practice, and the norm by Max. The branding stencil had been passed from Gareth’s grandfather to his father!

A few clients have since asked Gareth where the name Avonlea came from and was it from Anne of Green Gables (also known as Anne of Avonlea, with Avonlea being a fictional community located on Prince Edward Island, Canada, the setting of Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel Anne of Green Gables.) One of Gareth’s aunties has since confirmed that both Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea were well read in the Hunt household as Gareth’s father and his siblings were growing up in the 1940s. Auntie even showed Gareth her copy of the novels!

If you look at the photo above, the wool classed by Gareth’s father is EX SUP AAA FM. This means Extra Super Fine Merino wool, which was the highest quality and most valuable wool produced by Gareth’s parents at Derrinallum in western Victoria. This wool was consistently sought after by international wool buyers.

Gareth and the team will continue delivering the highest quality service and advice to our clients under the name of Avonlea.
